Exploring the Universe in gravitational waves in the milli-Hz band

by Prof. Stas Babak (Université de Paris)

Description

LISA is a large class ESA-lead mission scheduled for launch in 2034. It aims at exploring the universe in gravitational waves
within the frequency band from 0.1 mHz to 0.1 Hz. It will observe population of Galactic ultra-compact binaries,
merging massive black holes, extreme mass ratio inspirals, early inspiral stage of the stellar mass black holes and, hopefully,
stochastic signal from the early Universe. In this talk I will review the main gravitational sources and our ability to detect
them with LISA. Then I describe the science goals which we want to achieve with gravitational waves observations in the
milli-Hz band.
