Description

On Wednesday, September 22nd at 11:00 am, GSSI will host the a special Lecture by Prof. Sir Michael Berry on the theme "Variations on a theme of Aharonov and Bohm", aimed for students and researchers from the mathematical and physics areas.

The lecture will be held in a hybrid format, both in streaming (via Zoom) and onsite, at the GSSI Auditorium (GSSI Rectorate Building), with a maximum number of 60 onsite participants. Participants interested to join the lecture - onsite or online - are kindly requested to register, using the corresponding form (onsite or online registration form) at the registration page, by September 21, 2021. The meeting ID and password of the lecture will be sent by e-mail to all registrants on September 22, 2021 at 8 am.

Michael Berry is a worldwide known scientist, whose important contributions to mathematics and physics have stimulated and motivated a large amount of theoretical and experimental activity in widely different fields of physics over the last fifty years, ranging from quantum mechanics to chemistry, up to cosmology and optics. Professor of Physics (Emeritus) at Bristol University, Michael Berry has received important awards and honors, including the prestigious Wolf Prize for Physics in 1998, appointed “for the discovery of quantum topological and geometrical phases, specifically the Aharonov-Bohm effect, the Berry phase, and their incorporation into many fields of physics.”

In addition to this special lecture, the GSSI will host a second talk by Micheal berry as part of the workshop "Statistical and Quantum Mechanics: reconsidering their foundations in the light of new cutting edge experiments and theoretical models" , to be held from 20 to 23 September 2021.
