I will present and discuss thermonuclear supernovae (Type Ia) from an observer's perspective, covering their properties, progenitors, and role as cosmological probes. I will particularly address the enduring question of the nature of the systems that produce these explosions, highlighting how gravitational wave detectors in the deciHz range may offer a definitive answer.
